This is a really interesting and challenging conversation prompted by Mark Berry's initial honest post about his struggle with the church's unstated expectation that pioneers will become pastors. I'm particularly stuck by Mark's comment later in the thread where he writes, in response to one person's practical question, "I don't think it necessarily means moving to a new place... but about keeping true to gifting in community... as I say it seems to be generally accepted/expected that Pioneers will become Pastors, but that assumes that leadership is held, I wonder what might happen if leadership were not held..."

Well worth a read!

am I allowed to 'preach'?...

So here I am preparing my sermon for Sunday and wondering, as a result, whether I can really call myself 'emerging' (do I want to?... that's another post!), when I came across this great post from Maggi Dawn. I've been asked on several occasions if I think that the days of preaching are numbered, and my response has been something like, "no... but I think the days of unaccountable and unquestioned preaching are numbered." Maggi puts it much better when she writes...

"I'll tell you what - just for a minute, let's not call it preaching. Let's describe what it really is - it's talking and telling the gospel in an engaging and inviting way that draws people in; offers them treasures without insisting on how they wear them; gives them ingredients and invites them round to help you cook."

Kester has begun what promises to be a hilarious series entitled "The Spiritual Failings of an 'Emerging Leader'", and the first post 'Failing to Fast' is great - well worth a read! I was chatting to someone yesterday who is exploring the whole 'vocation to ministry' thing. As part of our conversation we spoke about the value of vulnerable leadership, and the urgent need to pull clergy and church leaders down from the pedestals that so many have put them (us) on and see all as co-travellers on the journey of faith. Kester's post is a healthy (burgers aside!) contribution to this process. Go read...
